Hugo Tomas is a Zapotec-American trumpeter who hails from Greater Los Angeles. His musical experience across Regional Mexican, Latin, Classical, and Jazz styles has made him a quickly emerging freelancer and Educator in Southern California and Mexico. Mr.Tomas is part of OaxaCalifornia, a transnational community in Los Angeles dedicated to preserving and innovating the culture of Oaxaca. As a proud Zapoteco, he was the director and trumpeter for the Oaxacan band, Banda Descendencia Yalalteca. He has performed with Los Angeles Opera, San Diego Symphony, Corona Symphony, Arturo Sandoval, Gordon Goodwin, Mannheim Steamroller, Miguel Bose, Ayme Nuviola, Gente de Zona, Sonora Dinamita, Sonora Santanera, and many others.
A dedicated educator, Mr.Tomas maintains a regular trumpet studio and is currently a teaching artist for Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, Young Musicians Foundation, and Harmony Project, he is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion by offering resources to underserved and marginalized students. In 2021, Mr. Tomas founded Hugo Tomas Trumpet Academy to provide low-cost trumpet classes to the youth of Los Angeles in hopes of inspiring the next generation of Angeleno trumpeters. He hopes his experience as a former student in a non-profit organization will allow him to help others find the same inspiration he found in music.
His expertise has earned him an invitation to The Conservatory of Music of the State of Mexico for their annual Summer Masterclass Series. Additionally, Mr. Tomas has been invited to present as a panelist alongside fellow Oaxacan colleagues, discussing Oaxacan Band Culture and its integration into Western Band Culture at prominent institutions including the University of Houston, University of Texas at El Paso, University of California Riverside, and the University of Southern California.
Mr.Tomas received a Master of Music in Classical Trumpet Performance from California State University, Fullerton (2022), under the mentorship of David Pittel and Sycil Mathai. He obtained a Bachelor of Music in Commercial Trumpet Performance from Los Angeles College of Music (2019) under the mentorship of Willie Murillo, Howie Shear, Bryan Lipps, David Pittel, Sycil Mathai and Dan Rosenboom. Other teachers and mentors include Barbara Loranga, Charlie Davis, Ryan Bullard, John Hanpadungvongs, and June Cheledon.
